FAQ

You may have found us because you are interested in finding a therapist for yourself, a friend or a family member. Life is complicated and presents many challenges for us all. Finding the right kind of therapy and the right therapist for you can make all the difference.

If you are considering therapy, you may be asking…

How do I know if therapy is right for me and how do I choose my therapist?

These are serious and important questions. We begin to answer these questions with the fundamental belief that therapy is about personal growth and change. The therapy process should not be all about curing psychological pathologies. Please review the Who We Are page of the website to learn more about our treatment philosophy and approach. If you like what you read about us, please schedule a free consultation with our Clinical Director to find out more.

What should I expect from my free consultation?

Our process begins with a 30-minute conversation with the Clinical Director.  We want to learn about your current situation, hear about why you are considering therapy and whether individual, couple or group approach would be best for you.  This conversation will give you the chance to see if you feel comfortable with our treatment approach.  This conversation will also help inform the Clinical Director as to  which of our therapists is most likely to be a good fit for you should you decide to move forward with us. It is very important that you feel comfortable with your therapist.

How long is a session and how often do we meet?

Following the initial meeting, subsequent sessions are 50 minutes long. We believe that meeting once a week helps promote effective therapy. However, you and your therapist may decide it is worthwhile to meet more frequently if desired.

Is my information confidential?

The success of the therapy relationship depends on trust. The information that you share with your therapist is kept strictly confidential according to HIPAA standards. There are, however, a few exceptions where information may be shared with another of your healthcare providers if needed and with your approval. In addition, the therapist is legally mandated to disclose information if there is suspicion of harm to oneself, harm to others or child abuse. But, if these disclosures are necessary, they will be discussed with you in advance.

Do you prescribe medication?

The therapists at Village Counseling are not physicians and therefore cannot prescribe. If you or your therapist believe you would benefit from medication along with your therapy, we would help to refer you to a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner for a medication evaluation.

What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?

A goal of psychodynamic therapy is to help you gain self-awareness and understanding of how experiences in your past can influence your present life. Self-reflection and self-examination of emotional blind spots is helpful for people who don’t understand why they keep repeating the same patterns in relationships. Therapy can relieve distress, promote learning, facilitate change, and lead to personal growth. Over time you can expect to handle difficulties in a more adaptive manner, experience improved interpersonal relationships and productivity at work, and continue to develop new insights into your thoughts, feelings, and behavior.

What is group therapy? How do I know if it would be right for me?

Group therapy has long been recognized as a highly beneficial adjunct to individual therapy.  In group therapy you will gain insights from other group members while they address their personal and professional challenges in life as well as when you share yours. Through the sharing process, you will experience empathy and understanding from the group that can give you a new perspective that will help you heal and implement healthy changes in your life. We will help you identify what might be sources and causes of anxiety, depression, and relational problems both past and present. Our goal is to provide a new community in your life where you feel safe to explore yourself and to grow and change.
